Orthodontic fun facts

Everyone loves fun facts. Fun, fun, fun! The American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, has come up with some fun facts about orthodontics that our team at Newhart Orthodontics thought you might enjoy.

• There are nearly 4 million people in orthodontic treatment throughout the United States. Three out of four are younger than 18.
• The first mechanical treatment for correcting irregular teeth was suggested by Gaius Plinius Secundus (A.D 23-79).
• The American Association of Orthodontists is comprised of more than 12,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad.
• The time required to complete orthodontic treatment ranges from 12 to 36 months depending on the nature and severity of the problem.
• Of the 160,000 dentists in the United States and Canada, 8,000 are practicing orthodontists.
• The cement that attaches the braces to the teeth is now made with a special fluoride-releasing substance.
• Wires activated by body heat used in today's braces originally were developed by NASA for use in the space program.
• In addition to alleviating or preventing physical health problems, orthodontics can boost self-esteem as treatment aligns teeth, jaws and lips.
• Famous orthodontic patients include: Dr. Joyce Brothers, Hale Irwin, Cher, Diana Ross, Phyllis Diller, Chelsea Clinton, Whoopi Goldberg, Daisy Fuentes and Brandi.

Smile wider, live longer!

Folks with big smiles may actually live longer than those who don’t, according to a March 2010 study at Michigan’s Wayne State University. Dr. Newhart has known for quite some time that positive emotion has been linked to both physical and mental health, but researchers at the university did something quite interesting: they looked at photos of 230 ball-players who began their careers in baseball prior to 1950 and studied their smile intensity (ranging from big smile, no smile or partial smile). The players' smile ratings were compared with data from deaths that occurred from 2006 through 2009. The researchers then took into account other factors that impact life longevity, including body mass index, career length and even college attendance.

The results? Researchers found that players who weren't smiling in the photos lived to be an average age of 72.9 years. Players with partial smiles lived to be 75. Those with big smiles, however, lived on average to be 79.9 years old.
The take-away from the new study? Smile now, smile often and you might just live longer! Have you been perfecting your smile by visiting our team for your orthodontic treatment? If not, give us a call!

A Great Braces Friendly Halloween Recipe

Our team knows how tempting this time of the year can be on our sweet tooth. With all of the caramel, candy corn, and lollipops that are often passed around to trick-or-treaters, we realize that it can sometimes be hard to find hard, chewy, sticky, and crunchy candy alternatives.

However, there is good news! Today, we would like to share a great braces-friendly Halloween recipe with all of our patients, courtesy of the American Association of Orthodontics, or AAO, and “The Braces Cookbook” by Pamela Waterman. This Spider Bites recipe is delicious, and provided that you remember to brush and floss after indulging, this is a cookie that won’t bite back!

Spider Bites

Ingredients:

• 1 cup shortening
• 1 cup sugar
• 2 Tbsp. water
• 1 Tsp. vanilla
• 2 eggs
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• ½ cup cocoa
• 1 Tsp. salt
• ½ Tsp. baking powder
• 1 package black rope licorice, cut into 1-inch pieces**
• 1 small tube of white (or color of choice) frosting
• Toothpicks

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

In a large bowl, combine shortening, sugar, water, and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Add eggs into the mixture and blend. Slowly mix in flour, cocoa, salt and baking powder using low-medium speed. Drop tablespoon helpings of mixture onto ungreased cookie sheets and roll each helping into a ball.

Bake 9 minutes at 375 degrees. The batch should produce around three dozen cookies.

Let cookies cool for about 10 minutes. Then using a toothpick, create four small holes in either side of the cookie. Still using the toothpick, push one end of a piece of the cut licorice into each hole, creating the “legs” of the spider. Once all eight pieces are in place, create eyes or decorate at will using the white frosting. Then eat and enjoy!

**Licorice can sometimes stick to braces; parents should monitor

Invisalign® can work for you AND improve your Oral Health!

The hygienic benefits of Invisalign®

It’s removable for good hygiene
You can brush and floss normally, which can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

Healthier gums
Properly positioned teeth are easier to brush and floss than teeth that are crowded, crooked, or spaced too far apart. Research has shown that periodontal tissue health may improve after Invisalign® treatment reducing the risk of periodontitis and gingivitis.

You can still eat when you want
Because the aligners are removable and should be removed when you eat, you don’t have to worry about what you eat.

Cleanings are quicker and easier than with traditional orthodontics

There are no brackets or wires to clean around as with traditional orthodontics.

So, in recognition of October being the National Dental Hygiene Month, Dr. Newhart will be offering a FREE Invisalign® Consultation with

October Marks the National Orthodontic Health Month!

October symbolizes the transition into the Fall season and of course, Halloween! For our team at Newhart Orthodontics, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), and orthodontic patients around the country, October also marks the National Orthodontic Health Month. This month is a great time to remind patients of the importance of strong oral hygiene and a braces-friendly diet, especially since many of the sticky and sweet Halloween treats can be harmful to braces and other orthodontic appliances.

Candy remains a huge part of Halloween for tens of millions of American kids each year. The National Confectioners Association says 93 percent of children in the United States go trick-or-treating, and estimates candy sales will be higher this year than ever. Candy is not all bad in moderation, but can lead to big problems in excess! It can lead to tooth decay, broken or chipped teeth, and delayed orthodontic treatment time due to broken or loose appliances and braces. Get the facts about Halloween candy and orthodontics by asking us! You can also learn more on the AAO’s National Orthodontic Health Month website. We also appreciate your help in spreading the word!

Invisalign Teen - Promoting Self Confidence and Esteem in Teens

One in two teens believe that by wearing metal braces, they are more self conscious when smiling, and have a lower self esteem.

This information was found in a 2009 national survey by Align Technology, the makers of Invisalign and Invisalign Teen. The takeaway? Invisalign gives teens (and parents) a choice for a clear, invisible alternative to straighter teeth. The study found that more than half of the surveyed teens believed they are more self-conscious with metal braces, while also smiling less. At an age when image is so important, the thought of having metal brackets and wires constantly attached to teeth may intensify the already-delicate confidence of today's teens. But... not to worry! We are pleased to offer Invisalign and new Invisalign Teen at Newhart Orthodontics. Give us a call to set up a consultation for your teen to learn more!

In the meantime, check out the Invisalign Teen article on our website.

Ask Us: Why is it so important to have straight teeth?

Some people wonder why Los Angeles area orthodontist Dr. Scott Newhart and our team work tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at Newhart Orthodontics can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!
Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a consultation. Dr. Newhart can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Top ten tips for keeping your BRACES sparklin’ clean

Keeping your teeth clean is more important than ever when you have braces. Food bits have more spots than usual to hide in your mouth, so you must be diligent in order to avoid bad breath, swollen gums, discolored teeth and cavities. If you remove plaque regularly during treatment, you'll experience better results and shorter treatment time. Keep plaque at bay with these top ten tips:

1. One tooth at a time. When you brush, take time with each individual tooth – at least 10 seconds each – and pay careful attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.

2. It’s all about the angles. Brush the tops of your teeth and braces with your brush angled down toward where they meet. Brush the bottoms of your teeth and braces with your brush angled up.

3. The tooth, the whole tooth, nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, it’s equally important to clean the inner surface of your teeth (tongue side) as well as the chewing surface. And be sure to clean along your gum line – a key spot for plaque buildup.

4. Step 1: eat, step 2: clean. While you’re in treatment, it’s important to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth, and these food bits interact with bacteria in your mouth to cause decay. The longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater opportunity for plaque to form. If you are eating somewhere that you can’t brush, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.

5. Like a Boy Scout, always be prepared. The easiest way to be sure you can brush after every meal is to get in the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Designate a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your purse, backpack, or laptop case.

6. Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.

7. Fluoride is your friend. Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste, and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.

8. Pointy brushes reach tiny places. Interproximal brushes (sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes) are cone-shaped and come in very handy for reaching spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t.

9. Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader, which helps you get the floss into tight places. Other patients like an all-in-one product called Superfloss, which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces, and regular floss for narrow spaces.

10. Make time for the pros. It’s your job to take care of the everyday cleaning. But make sure to visit your dentist regularly while in treatment, to get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide. If you need help finding the right Dentist for you, feel free to contact our office - we’d love to help!

Hope this helps!

Regular checkups with your dentist are essential in maintaining good oral health

Are you brushing your teeth twice a day during your orthodontic treatment? If yes, that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your dentist every six months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting our office, of course). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health.

Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.

During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, let us know during your next visit and we will provide a few great references in the greater Los Angeles area!

But before you buy into those myths, we think you should get the facts! Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists set the record straight (no pun intended) and have provided some information that sheds some light on the myths and facts of orthodontics. We encourage you to check them out today!

Ask Newhart Orthodontics: What can Invisalign® do for my oral health?

When considering treatment options, patients often ask us how Invisalign treatment is so different than traditional braces. Well, there are more reasons to smile about Invisalign with Newhart Orthodontics than you may know. Invisalign is a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, and besides straightening your teeth, can improve your oral health. Here’s how:

Healthy gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.

Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque and even gum disease.

Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.

If you have any questions about Invisalign, just ask Dr. Newhart the next time you’re in for an appointment. Or, you may post your question on our Facebook page! You can also read this article for more information on Invisalign and your oral health.

June is National Smile Month!

We hope everyone enjoyed the long holiday weekend! Now that we’re in June, it’s once again time to remind all of our patients and their family’s to show off their smiles with their summer tans! After all, June is National Smile Month, and a great time to promote good dental habits such as brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist, in addition to taking care of your braces.

Did you know that according to many psychology studies, a person's smile outranked eyes, hair and body as the most important physical feature. Do you have any suggestions for our patients to practice good oral hygiene at home or over the summer? What is the one element of oral health people forget over the long summer months? What advice or tips would you give to our patients who are taking off for vacation soon?

Please send us your response, along with any photos, videos, or testimonials you wish to share.

As always, let us know if there is something “new” in your life that you want to share with all of us at Team Newhart Orthodontics!

Working with Patients with Special Needs

At Newhart Orthodontics, we work with patients of all walks of life. This includes patients with special needs and/or disabilities. In our office we are able to take excellent care of most adults and children with disabilities. Part of our secret is to have spacious reception and treatment area with plenty of room.

In the specific case of autism we recommend that parents be present at all times during examination and treatment. We always send photos of the doctor and photos of the office to the home prior to the first visit. This allow the parent to begin to introduce us to the child before the first visit. With patience, most children can be treated.

If you or your child have specific needs, give us a call and find out how best we can accommodate them!

Tips For A Career In Orthodontics

Recently, Dr. Newhart received an email from Justin, an individual from southern Illinois who aspires to be an orthodontist. In it, Justin asked Dr. Newhart about how he became an orthodontist, and any tips he would provide to those looking to enter the field. We've included Justin's first message, and Dr. Newhart's response below, check them out!

Dr. Newhart:

It is my pleasure to be writing to you on your profession and my dream occupation, an Orthodontist. I first want to tell you a brief summary of who I am. My name is Justin Jenkel and I am a senior at Pinckneyville Community High School, located in a small town in southern Illinois. I am seventeen years old and involved in a great amount of extra-curricular activities. With the small amount of free time that I have, I love to play golf and aid a child who suffers from a case of cerebral palsy. My intended major is Pre-Dentistry, and I plan to attend college at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and work my way towards my dream. I feel that I would be a great Orthodontist because I have shown leaderships qualities throughout my life, I am able to work with anyone, and I am known to have a smile throughout the day. I have been surfing the web, and I explored your website and felt that you would be a great person to talk for assistance. What was the process like to work your way up towards an Orthodontist? Do you have any tips for me as I begin college this upcoming fall? I appreciate the time that you take to help me with my future decisions and plans.

Once again, thank you for your time Doc.

Sincerely,

Justin J.

Hello Justin,

Thanks for contacting me. You sound like a great guy with an exciting future ahead of you. One of the best things about life is that you can constantly invent and re-invent yourself to match your dreams.

I'd love to meet with you, but since we live so far apart let me at least answer your questions the best I can to help you in your dream of becoming an orthodontist.

1. What was the process like to work your way up towards an Orthodontist?

Well, Justin, there are many paths people take in their journey to becoming an orthodontist. Some people go straight through all the schools without a break and others take breaks during process. This is sometimes by necessity and sometimes by choice. No matter which way you go, you will need to have 3-4 years of undergraduate education, followed by 3-4 years of dental school, followed by a 2-3 year orthodontic residency.

2. Do you have any tips for me as I begin college this upcoming fall?

With the inquisitive mind that you have, it almost goes without saying that you want to expose yourself to as much as possible that your college has to offer. College is not only a challenge academically, lifting you to another level, but also a time in life of self-discovery. You are a young man who is still learning about himself, still growing. Going away from home to attend college is scary, exciting, stimulating, overwhelming and wonderful all to the same time. I predict that you will experience your highest highs and your lowest lows during your 4 years as you challenge yourself. I also predict when you look back on your graduation day, with your degree in hand....you will see incoming freshman and you will notice how much you have grown and changed over the previous 4 years.

Some tips:

a. Keep your focus, but still be open to change. See where life leads you.

b. Never lose your faith. Remember that everything will be ok and your life is guided..even when you don't know it. So when you go through times where things are not going the way you think they should..look around and listen to what the experience is teaching you that will make you stronger in the future.

c. Never lose your passion for what you doing. Passion is the juice of life and without it you will never feel satisfied and fulfilled.

d. Study hard and keep up excellent grades. There is tremendous competition at every level. The competition increases the higher you go with many people vying for fewer and fewer spots. For example, there were only 4 people selected for my orthodontic residency. Over 400 doctors applied for the 4 spots.

e. If your board scores are not satisfactory, look at Kaplan and other preparatory schools to raise them. I know several young people who have gone to Kaplan Saturday and evening classes with great results.

More About Orthodontics From Dr. Scott Newhart

There are so many questions about orthodontics that we never ask, so we took some time to explain the most common concerns.

At what age should orthodontic treatment occur?

Orthodontic treatment can be started at any age. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age before jaw growth has slowed. Early treatment may mean that a patient can avoid surgery and more serious complications. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child first visit an orthodontist by age seven or earlier if a problem is detected by parents, the family dentist or the child's physician.

What is Phase I and Phase II treatment?

Phase I, or early interceptive treatment, is limited orthodontic treatment (i.e. expander, Herbst, Facemask, headgear, or partial braces) before all of the permanent teeth have erupted. Such treatment can occur between the ages of six and ten. This treatment is sometimes recommended to make more space for developing teeth, correction of crossbites, overbites, underbites, or harmful oral habits. Phase II treatment is also called comprehensive treatment, because it involves full braces when all of the permanent teeth have erupted, usually between the ages of eleven and thirteen.

Would an adult patient benefit from orthodontics?

Absolutely!! Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age. Everyone wants a beautiful and healthy smile. Between 30-40% of our patients are adults.

How does orthodontic treatment work?

Braces use steady gentle pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions. The brackets that are placed on your teeth and the arch wire that connects them are the main components. When the arch wire is placed into the brackets, it tries to return to its original shape. As it does so, it applies pressure to move your teeth to their new, more ideal positions.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment times vary on a case-by-case basis, but the average time is from one to two years. Actual treatment time can be affected by rate of growth and severity of the correction necessary. Treatment length is also dependent upon patient compliance. Maintaining good oral hygiene and keeping regular appointments are important in keeping your treatment time on schedule.

Do braces hurt?

The placement of bands and brackets on your teeth does not hurt. Once your braces are placed and connected with the arch wires, you may feel some soreness of your teeth for one to four days. Your lips and cheeks may need one to two weeks to get used to the braces on your teeth.

Will braces interfere with playing sports?

No. It is recommended, however, that patients protect their smiles by wearing a mouth guard when participating in any sporting activity. Mouth guards are inexpensive, comfortable, and come in a variety of colors and patterns.

Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments?

No. However, there may be an initial period of adjustment. In addition, brace covers or wax can be provided to prevent discomfort.

Should I see my general dentist while I have braces?

Yes, you should continue to see your general dentist every six months for cleaning and dental checkups, or more frequently as recommended.

Ask Dr. Newhart: Who benefits from braces?

Braces aren’t just for pre-adolescents and teenagers anymore! Dr. Newhart will tell you that anyone, at any age, can benefit from orthodontic treatment, whether it’s correcting a problem not treated in your younger years, or catching a problem early.

To ensure the best overall treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, recommends that children receive an orthodontic consultation as early as age seven. If a problem is evident, taking action early can spare a lot of treatment and expense down the road.

If you never received orthodontic treatment when you were young, don’t worry! You’re never too old for a beautiful smile. Set up an appointment for a consultation and find out how adult orthodontics will transform your smile, as well as your life!

Invisalign® Tips, from Dr. Newhart

Many people know that Invisalign is a great solution to braces if you don't want to experience the look and feel of traditional metal braces. What few people know, though, is that just like traditional braces, Invisalign requires proper care to work effectively. Good oral hygiene is highly important, even when you are wearing something in your mouth that you can take out to eat with. It's still likely that your aligners can build up plaque if not treated properly. When wearing your Invisalign aligners, Dr. Newhart wants you to ask yourself the following questions:

1. Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.

2. Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not a necessity for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky a soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.

3. Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also easy: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

These are all very simple steps, and ultimately, they help to keep you building good oral habits. If you have any questions about Invisalign or your treatment here at Newhart Orthodontics, give us a call!

What’s so special about an Orthodontist?

"Dentists, Orthodontists, they're all the same right?" We hear our patients asking this question as they wonder about the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. Before becoming an orthodontist Dr. Newhart started out in dental school and earned a DMD. After dental school however, Dr. Newhart decided he wanted to learn more about orthodontics, which is one of nine specialties within the dental field. So he stayed in school for a few more years and became an expert in orthodontics; which focuses on tooth and jaw alignment and bite problems like overbites and under bites.

Other dental specialties you may have heard of include endodontic (focusing on the soft tissue inside your teeth), periodontic (focusing on the gums and other tissues surrounding your teeth) and prosthodontic (focusing on restoring and replacing damaged teeth).

Isn't it nice to know there's a dental expert here to help you through any type of treatment your teeth, jaw and gums might need?

The advantage of Invisalign Teen™ at Newhart Orthodontics

At an age when image is so important, the thought of having metal brackets and wires constantly attached to teeth may intensify the already-delicate confidence of today's teens. But... not to worry! There is a clear alternative to traditional braces! The team at Newhart Orthodontics thought we'd remind you that Invisalign Teen™ gives you a whole new way to wear braces for a "clearly" amazing smile!

For many teens, Invisalign Teen offers a trouble-free, clear alternative to traditional braces; and not only that, but it offers them the chance to have straight teeth without losing self-confidence!

So how does Invisalign Teen work? Much in the same fashion as Invisalign, but with a few added characteristics tailored specifically to teenagers’ lifestyles. For instance, Invisalign Teen is designed with “compliance indicators” that fade from dark to light during the two week period that particular tray is used and once it has faded teens know to change trays. Each aligner comes with up to six free individual replacement aligners in case the original aligner ends up lost or broken. Another big benefit for the patient!

The treatment period for Invisalign Teen varies from nine to 18 months. If your teen is considering orthodontic treatment, please contact us and we’ll answer any questions you may have about Invisalign Teen.

Is Invisalign® really customized for each patient?

Yes, it is, and that’s part of what makes it work. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing we do is to take an impression of your teeth as they are now and digitize it. Using special software, we look at the current positioning of your teeth and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Next we use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. And since the aligners are virtually invisible, nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!

Dr. Newhart is one of the top Invisalign orthodontists in the country, having achieved the status of Invisalign Elite Premier Provider. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, give us a call at 424-354-2735.
